Accessibility: We strive to meet Level AA of the latest WCAG accessibility guidelines so that Pantry Host is as accessible to everyone as possible.

Privacy: Pantry Host stores all data locally on your machine. Nothing is sent to external servers. No accounts, no tracking, no analytics. If you choose to enable AI features, requests are sent directly to the Anthropic API using your own key and are not stored or used for training.

Optionally enhanced by Claude Code. Import recipes from any URL, generate new ones from what you have on hand, and manage your pantry conversationally. AI features require an API key and are entirely opt‑in.

Globalization: Pantry Host is currently available in English. We’re exploring community‑led translations — join the discussion.

Pantry Host is created and maintained by JP DeVries. Built on a lean web standards stack — HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript APIs — enhanced by React, Node.js, PostgreSQL, and GraphQL. The front end fully leverages native browser capabilities before adding dependencies. A service worker handles offline caching and an “away from pantry” mode for use on the go.

Source code is authored in TypeScript, primarily via Claude Code. Rex, a Rust-based Next.js alternative by Liminal Labs, powers the server-side rendering. Packages are built with either Vite or Rex. Witness, also by Liminal Labs, automates screencasts, screenshots, and smoke tests. Open Food Facts provides barcode lookup data, and the International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS) supplies the PLU produce-code dataset used to identify pantry produce by checkout sticker. Bluesky and the AT Protocol provide decentralized recipe and menu import via the exchange.recipe lexicons. The Cooklang Federation, TheMealDB, TheCocktailDB, Public Domain Recipes, Wikibooks Cookbook (CC-BY-SA), and recipe-api.com provide additional federated recipe search and import; recipe-api.com additionally supplies borrowed nutritional info rendered on demand and never stored. A single Docker command is offered for containerized setup.

The self-hosted, privacy-first architecture relies on Tailscale for secure remote access and guest sharing over the local network. Pantry Host is designed to work as a Claude Code project and runs within the Claude Code preview using a dedicated “Claude” theme.
